how it works

Whether it’s being part of our learn to run club or our walking club, our members are given the opportunity to truly enjoy getting exercise in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment three or more times a week. We work with individuals living in temporary housing and recovery centers. We commit to showing up for them as they exercise in a group setting. We support and encourage shelter staff to join our walks and learn to run programs as a way to alleviate stress and connect with their clients outside of the shelter in a neutral safe space while enjoying physical activity. Being part of a regular group activity with goals and milestones gives individuals a sense of purpose. Kilometers are counted. High-fives are given. Progress is celebrated. At the end of our 12 week run programs a victory run is held and members celebrate their accomplishments together.

why it works

running

Our gentle learn to run program encourages members to set to a goal and stick to it. Our run program is open to shelter guests and staff. Learning to run together helps reduce stress, increase confidence and achieve goals which leads to better mental and physical health.

walking

Our walking program is for members who want to take a softer approach to getting physically active. Walking as a group each morning we practice gratitude, spend time sharing with one another and laughing. We also have a beautiful therapy dog who joins us and makes everyone’s day a little brighter. A morning walk boosts mood, reduces stress and anxiety and can ease symptoms of depression.

community

Our community of volunteers support and encourage our members by walking/running alongside them as they step out of their comfort zone and believe in themselves. Becoming a volunteer adds meaning to your life and the lives of others.
